How the Self-Prep Program Works

This self-prep program is designed to help students build strong skills step by step. The curriculum is written in short, focused lessons that teach one skill at a time. After learning a new concept, students complete a short quiz to confirm that they understand the skill before moving forward. This method helps students master small pieces of information instead of feeling overwhelmed by large amounts of material.

Students receive access to both SAT and ACT self-prep curriculum, giving them flexibility to prepare for either exam. Each program includes about 30 hours of structured learning, for a total of roughly 60 hours of preparation. Students also complete section tests and full-length digital exams that mirror the real testing experience.

Because practice tests are digital, students become comfortable with the testing format before exam day. The program also includes Desmos calculator training, helping students learn how to use tools efficiently during the math section. For students who qualify for accommodations, extended-time testing options are available.

This SAT and ACT self-prep program for homeschool students provides structured digital practice, step-by-step lessons, and realistic testing experiences that help students prepare with confidence.

When Should Students Start Test Prep?

I recommend that students begin test preparation during the spring of 10th grade. Starting at this time allows students to build skills gradually and prepare with confidence for testing during junior year.

Most students experience test prep as a five-month journey, where they learn new skills, complete practice tests, and build confidence over time. The goal is for students to reach their highest score by October of junior year, which helps maximize scholarship and college opportunities. For example, one of my favorite full-ride scholarships has a December deadline for high school juniors, so students need strong scores already on record during the fall of junior year in order to be competitive applicants.

Student Results and Outcomes

Students who use structured self-prep programs often see meaningful improvement when they stay consistent with practice and follow the step-by-step curriculum. By mastering skills one concept at a time and completing realistic digital practice tests, students build both confidence and accuracy.

Many students who prepare with Horton Test Prep programs strengthen their test scores, improve their confidence, and become more competitive for college admissions and scholarship opportunities. Consistent preparation over several months allows students to identify weak areas, build strong foundations, and approach test day with greater confidence.

  • Most students benefit from starting test preparation during the spring of 10th grade, which allows them to pace their learning over several months. Another strong option is to focus heavily during the summer between 10th and 11th grade, helping students build momentum before junior year begins. The goal is for students to reach their highest score by October of junior year, which allows them to qualify for opportunities such as National Merit recognition and other competitive scholarships that begin during the fall of junior year.

  • Students receive one full year of access to the self-prep program. This extended access allows students to move at a comfortable pace, revisit lessons as needed, and complete multiple practice tests before their official exam. Having access for a full year also gives students flexibility to adjust their study schedule based on school and family commitments.

Understanding the Difference Between SAT and ACT Timing

One important difference between the SAT and ACT is the amount of time students have to answer each question. On average, students have about 67 seconds per math question on the ACT, compared to about 95 seconds per math question on the SAT.

This difference in pacing can make one test feel more comfortable than the other, depending on a student's strengths. Some students perform better when they have more time to think through each question, while others work well under faster pacing. Because this self-prep program includes preparation for both SAT and ACT, students can explore each test and determine which one best fits their learning style and testing strengths.

Reaching strong test scores early can also open doors to competitive scholarships that begin accepting applications during the fall of junior year.
